Kinetic studies on [methionine sulphoxide] cytochrome c.

A cytochrome c haem ligand, methionine-80, was photo-oxidized to methionine sulphoxide and the subsequent changes in redox properties and ligand binding were monitored kinetically. Isoelectric focusing of the product showed the presence of a single oxidized species, capable of binding CO when reduced. The binding of CO to the reduced protein was followed in stopped-flow experiments, which revea...

Penetration of albendazole sulphoxide into hydatid cysts.

The penetration of albendazole sulphoxide, the principal metabolite of albendazole into hydatid cysts (E granulosus) was measured by means of in vitro animal and clinical studies. The drug freely diffuses across the parasitic membranes. Cyst/serum concentrations of 22% were achieved in patients, longer pre-operative therapy produced higher concentrations.

Use of Dimethyl Sulphoxide for Preserving Corneal

SINCE it was discovered by Polge, Smith, and Parkes (1949) that living cells could be protected during freezing and thawing by adding glycerol to the storage medium, various substances and methods have been used in an attempt to achieve better results (Fleming,: 1952; Eastcott, Cross, Leigh, and North, 1954; Lovelock, 1954). We have been concerned with retaining the viability of corneal tissue ...

Bacterial dimethyl sulphoxide reductases and nitrate reductases.

interactions which can be done when more structural information is available, but they do provide order of magnitude estimates of interaction strengths. Evidently, considerable rearrangement of charge driven by reduction significantly raises the effective dielectric. It seems likely that centres S-2 and FR-2 are apparently low-potential clusters merely because they are the middle clusters in th...

Dimethyl sulphoxide enhances the effects of P(i) in myofibrils and inhibits the activity of rabbit skeletal muscle contractile proteins.

In the catalytic cycle of skeletal muscle, myosin alternates between strongly and weakly bound cross-bridges, with the latter contributing little to sustained tension. Here we describe the action of DMSO, an organic solvent that appears to increase the population of weakly bound cross-bridges that accumulate after the binding of ATP, but before P(i) release. DMSO (5-30%, v/v) reversibly inhibit...
